KAMALA HARRIS, THE GRAND DAUGHTER OF INDIA


VICE PRESIDENT CANDIDATE

On August 11, Joe Biden the democratic presidential candidate announced that Kamala Harris would serve as his running mate for the 2020 election cycle. In 2011, Harris made history when she was elected as the first Black and Indian American woman to serve as California’s attorney general. And if Joe Biden is elected, she will be the first Black, first female, and first Indian American vice president.

GRANDFATHER

The grandfather of Kamala Harris P V Gopalan was born in a small village called Painganadu south of Chennai in 1911. After independence in 1947, her grandfather continued as a civil servant for the new Indian Government

PARENTS

Kamala’s mother Shyamala Gopalan was the eldest of Gopalan’s four children. She moved to a new city every few years as her father was re-posted. Gopalan instilled great confidence in this young woman who came to America in the late 1950s alone and made a career as breast cancer researcher before dying of cancer in 2009.

Kamala’s father Donald J Harris who was born in Jamaica in 1938 moved to United States in 1960s to get his Ph.D. at the University of California- Berkeley. Harris taught at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University and finally secured a job as a professor of Economics at Stanford University. At present he holds the title as an emeritus professor

CHILDHOOD AND EDUCATION

The daughter Kamala was born on October 20 1964. A s a young girl she used to go to both the Black Baptist Church and a Hindu temple. She and her sister Maya visited their mother’s family in Chennai and her father’s family in Jemaica. She says she was strongly influenced by her grandfather P V gopalan.  His strong views on democracy and women’s rights impressed her.

Kamala’s parents divorced when she was seven years old

Harris is a graduate of Howard University and University of California.  A graduate in law, she began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s office. In 2003 she was elected district Attorney of San Francisco. She was elected Attorney general of California in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.   She was elected to the United States Senate in 2016.

MARRIED LIFE

kamala married douglass Emhoff a lawyer, divorcee and father of two children. A few years after Emhoff’s divorce from his first wife, he met Harris and proposed to her. Harris and Emhoff held their ceremony four months after their engagement. Harris wore a soft gold dress and the couple honoured one another’s cultural traditions with a flower garland placed round Emhoff’s neck as is common in Indian wedding. A glass was broken at the end of the ceremony to mark Jewish heritage.
